Topic: Sustainable Downtown Redevelopment: Revitalizing Historic Theaters – Alameda Theater
How can downtown historic theaters be economically sustainable in an era of multi-screens? Learn how the City of Alameda is returning the Art Deco Alameda Theater to its original use as a movie palace. This project is the key element in the overall redevelopment of the historic National-Register Park Street business district, a national Main Street program, and involves a carefully designed addition of a cineplex adjacent to the historic theater. Hear how the City of Alameda overcame major challenges, including eminent domain, litigation under CEQA, obtaining public and private funding for project, and community concerns about infill construction.
Speakers: Jennifer Ott, Development Manager, City of Alameda; Naomi Miroglio, AIA, Principal, Architectural Resources Group, Inc.
